Kentucky Blogging, Part 2 - The Nectar of the gods

Ale-8-1 (A late one) is probably not new to most of my readers. It's a great ginger ale from Winchester, Kentucky. You can find it in stores in surrounding states, and Dallas has a great store that stocks just about every regional soft-drink they can find, but it's really expensive there as you might imagine.

There was nothing like knocking back an Ale-8-1 after mowing the lawn. I miss that now, and have to settle for beer, but it's not the same. So I was glad to be in KY and taste the love once again. Unfortunately, I was unable to take any home with me, since I was flying.

There seems to be some disagreement as to the proper way to spell Ale-8-1. To settle the matter, I will post some pictures of the bottle.

Can you believe that in four years of living in KY, I have never sampled your beverage of choice? We'll be down for Homecoming in Oct. so perhaps, I'll give it a try for the first time. Swing on by my blog to see pics of Anna's first (and second) days of preschool.

Cherie, I honestly can't believe that. None of the guys on your "brother hall" exposed you to Ale 8? How can that be? Well, indeed you must imbibe. I warn you, for some it is an acquired taste, very sharp front end. But after a few sneezes you'll be hooked. I anxiously await your report.

Anna is very cute, although I'm having trouble seeing the resemblance. Are you sure she's your child?

I don't remember even ever being offered a taste... the crust. guys had that big keg of Sprecters (which is a WI brew of root beer) one year but other than that, no imbibing influence. I'll give 'er a try in a couple of months.

The company contradicts itself on the spelling on its own Web site, so we have no hope.

At first glance it appears that they do, even on the bottle, but here's what I think is going on. The name of the product is Ale-8-1. That is a difficult name to use outside of the logo, where the number one can be superscript. So the name of the company is Ale 8 One Bottling Company.

But the beverage itself should properly be spelled Ale-8-1.

My thoughts on the local bev...

Cher, when you're here in October, I'll make sure my fridge is stocked with some Ale 8s. Thanks for the tribute Philip. I love them when they are so cold they're almost frozen - just a little Ale 8 slush mixed in there. We've got this great Ale 8 bottle opener installed on the wall right next to the mini-fridge in our office's breakroom. It's fantastic - I'm considering getting one for my kitchen at home. I try to take a six-pack for my aunt and uncle in PA whenever I head up there. I love that they cherish them so much they save them for special occasions... making their supply last as long as possible. Oh and Erich, I want to try the Sprecher's. Sounds delish.

Sorry Erich - didn't mean to offend! I spent a couple of summers in that region (Milwaukee, not Milwakee) but it must have slipped my mind. ;) And it is good and I'm not a root beer drinker.
